Brewing Up a Storm: A John Thatcher Mystery
Published in Hardcover by St. Martin's Press (December, 1996)
Average review score:

It was OK but not one of her bestI thought there were too many characters and the story rambled on over the same ground. In addition, this story had too little emphasis on high finance which is always my favourite area. I felt after I read it that this story could have been about widgets and it would have made no real difference.
Very enjoyable but not up to her bestI have read all Emma Lathen's books and have just finished this one. It is fun, but I missed some of her usual characters - Tom Robichaux, Everett Gabler and Walter Bowman in particular. However, the plot was tight and altogether a good read

The Violent Land
Published in Paperback by Avon (December, 1994)
Average review score:

Nice but a bit of a letdownI had this book recommended to me by several people, but honestly, I found it a bit of a letdown. The story takes its merry time to reach an obvious conclusion. Also, the characters are often hard to keep apart as they intermingle in various ways. As well, Amado keeps an objective viewpoint throughout and sometimes seems to be condoning the actions of the "Colonels" and the inequities of the whole social structure he is describing, which is unusual considering his leftist past.
Not to be underestimated, however, is the sensuous atmosphere which pervades the book, the beautiful descriptions, and the sometimes (though not often enough) biting irony.
A great book about the fight for Cacao land in Brazil. This is a must read for Amado fans. The book can be compared to a cowboy story because it is a book about tough men who call themselves colonel. The colonels harvest cacao, the golden fruit. The two most powerful Colonels, Horacio and Zinho struggle for the rich Sequiro Grande forest, with armed gunmen and lawyers. You will root for one of the Colonels and be transported to a land where men are macho and life is cheap. A must read is the continuation, the Golden Harvest. Anno's Learning Games
Published in Hardcover by Putnam Pub Group Juv (September, 1994)
Average review score:

Anno's Learning GamesAnno's Learning Games is an excellent computer game for early math skills. It is easy for young children to use. I use it for language impaired students who need help in math vocabulary and concepts. There are several games that help children learn more, less, categorization, similarities and differences. There is a unique game that helps children learn to focus on specific differences in a format like 20 questions. Too bad it is out of production.....I am having a hard time finding another copy.

Baby Jane
Published in Paperback by Rutledge Books, Inc. (September, 2001)
Average review score:

Dave Putnam has a way with words........This is David Putnam's second book of poetry that I have read and he continues to touch the hearts and feelings of his readers. His sensitive choice of words establish a commonaility with his readers and spurs the emotions of his readers. "Silent Sunlight" is one of my favorites bringing memories of my own childhood. Thank you Dave for finding the words and penning them into verse to remind us all of what is truely important in the journey of life.....the lessons and feelings we learn.
